Rinderpest arrived in Africa in the 1890s.
The quickly dispersing illness known as "Rinderpest" in Africa in the 1890s had a terrible effect on people's lives and the local economy. This is a great example of the immense harm done to colonial cultures by European imperialism. Roughly at the end of the 1880s, rinderpest reached Africa. Italian forces occupied Eritrea in East Africa to feed on ill animals smuggled from British Asia and conquered it. From the east, Rift Valley Fever spread to the west like a forest fire until 1892, reaching Africa's Atlantic coast. It reached Cape, Africa's most southern tip, five years later. The rinderpest along the route destroyed 90% of the animals. African livelihoods were devastated by the loss of cattle.
