Mahatma Gandhi became a popular figure. In 1915, he travelled from South Africa to India. Indians marched peacefully against racial restrictions under Gandhi's leadership. His South African campaigns exposed him to many kinds of Indians. He travelled extensively during his first year to get to know the people, their needs, and the general condition of India. Gandhi advocated fostering class harmony as opposed to class rivalry. Agricultural labourers thought Gandhi would provide them with land, while peasants thought he would aid them in their struggle against zamindars. The peasants of Pratapgarh in the United Provinces stopped the illegal eviction of tenants at the end of a strong protest. Still, they believed Gandhiji had won this demand for them.
