Detailed Solution

Calico became the general name for all cotton textiles from India. It is derived from Calicut, and it was by this name that all the textile made of cotton in India, which went to Europe, was referred to. In the 16-17th century, various European trading companies bought cotton textiles from India and took them to their countries. Indian garments and cotton goods flooded their markets and became known as calicoes. India had a huge market in European countries for its cotton textiles before it became an importer of goods from Britain, owing to its colonial position. Calico, in general, is a heavy and plain woven textile that is made from unbleached and unprocessed cotton.
