After Mahatma Gandhi was arrested, industrial workers in Sholapur stormed police stations, municipal buildings, courthouses, and railroad stations. These facilities served as symbols of British tyranny. A terrified government's response was to implement a violent, repressive strategy. Women and children were beaten, peaceful satyagrahis were attacked, and around 100,000 people were imprisoned. Mahatma Gandhi decided to end the movement under this circumstance, and on March 5, 1931, he reached an agreement with Irwin.
