General caste cannot avail reservations. The government of India initiated the reservation policy to protect and promote the rights of the deprived lower class. The main motive was to shrink the gap between the upper and lower classes, bringing the latter on par with mainstream society. This law reserves seats for marginalised groups like SCs, STs, Dalits, Adivasis, and OBCs in government offices and educational institutions. This law was meant to eradicate inequality in society. However, to avail of the reservation facilities, the candidates needed to furnish their caste certificates. It acts as proof of their identity. If somebody violates the law, they can be subjected to punishment.
