The Sinhala community constitutes the largest share of the population in Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, 74% of the population are Sinhala, 18% are Tamils, and Sinhala speakers mainly follow Buddhism, while the Tamils are either Hindus or Muslims and a few Christians. When Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948, the Sinhala community thus dominated the government and initiated a policy that favoured majoritarianism. This led to a popular upsurge in the country as a power-sharing arrangement between the two communities was not created.
