Since its independence in 1930, Mexico has had presidential elections every six years. The country has never had a military or authoritarian regime. Until 2000, the PRI party, on the other hand, had won every election (Institutional Revolutionary Party). Opposition parties have attempted but failed to win elections in the past. The PRI was infamous for using a variety of dirty tactics to win elections. Government employees were obligated to attend party meetings. Teachers at government schools used to force parents to vote for the PRI. The media largely ignored the actions of competing political parties, except to criticise them.
