However, in contrast to their predecessors, the Mughals created an empire that seemed impossible or even possible only for a very short period. They expanded their empire from Agra and Delhi in the latter half of the sixteenth century. By the seventeenth century, they controlled nearly all of the Indian subcontinent. The structure of administration and ideas of governance they imposed helped outlast their rule, leaving a major political policy behind.
