Detailed Solution

Lord William Bentinck declared the practice of Sati illegal in 1829.
On December 4, 1829, Governor-General Lord William Bentinck issued the Bengal Sati Regulation, prohibiting the practice of sati in all territories governed by the British. According to the law, Sati's practice offends the sensibilities of human nature. The Sati system in India is said to have originated around the fourth century BC. However, historical evidence indicates that between the fifth and ninth centuries AD, this sacrifice was performed by the Kings' widows. Jauhar is one of the most popular traditions in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Sati is the name given to the Hindu practice of immolating a woman over her husband's funeral pyre. Although the Vedas do not endorse this practice, it is no longer done.
