The American industrialist Henry Ford introduced the moving 'assembly line' method to produce cars on a mass scale, which enabled them to produce cars faster and cheaper. In this method, the conveyor belt dictated the pace of the work; workers were forced to repeat a single task mechanically and continuously, and could not take a break or have a friendly word with a workmate because that would delay the entire motion. Thus the pace of work speeded up, but workers started quitting in large numbers because it was stressful working in the assembly lines where they were not in control of the pace. Ford responded by doubling the wages of the workers to $5. He made up for the high wages by increasing the speed in the assembly line and encouraging workers to perform better. His decision to double daily wages was a success.
