A Portuguese sailor named Vasco da Gama was among those who sailed from the Atlantic to the African coast, to discover the sea route to India in 1498. European sailors conducted unparalleled sea route discovery in the 15th century. They were motivated by a desire to discover routes to the Indian subcontinent and secure spices. His first expedition took him more than a year; he left Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, in 1498 and arrived in Calicut the following year. Despite the obvious risks, the newly expanded routes helped the Europeans make a lot of money.
