Social division based on caste is peculiar to India. A caste system is a degraded form of the varna system where society was divided into 4 varnas, i.e., brahmins, Kshatriyas, vaishyas, and Shudras. The Varna system was a system of labour division based on ability. However, it became a rigid and exploitative social system based on heredity. As a result, the shudra, the lower caste, and the outcast people were marginalised and treated as untouchables. Such an inhumane practice has led to the backwardness of these communities.
