The Earth is extremely hot from the inside, and its heat keeps increasing with depth. Geothermal energy exists because Earth is extremely hot from the interior. Groundwater in these areas becomes hot as it absorbs the heat from the rocks. So hot that when this groundwater comes up to the Earth's surface, it turns into steam. With the help of this stream, turbines are driven, and energy is generated.
Geothermal-producing states are Jammu and Kashmir, Uttrakhand, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh.
