Ibn Battuta explained how chieftains arranged their defence.
A fourteenth-century traveller from Morocco, Africa, Ibn Battuta, explained that chieftains sometimes fortified themselves in the mountains, rocky and rugged places, and sometimes even the bamboo groves. The bamboo in India is not hollow, but it is big.  Several parts of Bamboo are so intertwined that even though they cannot be affected by the fire, they are very strong. These forests served chieftains as ramparts, with cattle and their crops inside. There was the availability of water also inside these forests.
