The Srilankan Tamils felt that none of the major political parties led by the Buddhist Sinhala leaders was sensitive to their language and culture.
The Sinhala population was a majority in Sri Lanka, and they misused their rights and powers in government in the name of the majority community. Sri Lanka adopted majoritarianism to establish Sinhala's supremacy, due to which the Sinhala community enjoyed immense power. After independence in 1948, they gained power due to their majority, and the insensitive Sinhala leaders started controlling the government. In 1956, by passing an act, the Sinhala language was recognised as the nation's only official language, thus neglecting the Srilankan Tamils and their culture. Even the government followed preferential policies to favour the Sinhala community regarding university admissions and government jobs. A new constitution came into being that declared the duty of the state to protect and foster ''Buddhism'', the country's official religion. All these endeavours shown by the government made the Tamil community feel that the Sinhalas tarnished their culture and language, and rights.
