Sinhalese formed the majority in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is an island country in the Indian Ocean and a southern neighbour of India. It has a democratic form of government based on majority rule or majoritarianism. The country has Sinhalese as the Major population of the country, which comprises about 74% of the total people living there. In 1956, the official language, for the same reason, was decided as Sinhalese. The Tamils comprise about 16- 17%  of the total population and form a minority. Most of the Tamils on the island are of Indian origin.
