Mother Dairy formed under "Operation Flood," a dairy development program to make India a milk-sufficient nation.
Initially, Mother Dairy focused on Delhi and provided milk, along with vegetables and pulses, at a controlled rate determined by the Delhi government. It had 1500 milk booths and 300 Safal (fruit and vegetable brand of Mother Dairy) outlets in Delhi. Later, it expanded to other states. There is a major presence of Mother Dairy in Bangalore as well. Mother Dairy sources most of its milk requirements from dairy cooperatives and village-level farmer-centric organisations.
