Bhagat Singh founded the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) in 1928. Revolutionary nationalists like Bhagat Singh and his comrades envisioned a workers' and peasants' revolution to combat colonial rule and the rich exploiting classes. They established the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) in 1928 at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. The HSRA assassinated Saunders, a police officer who had led a lathi charge that killed Lala Lajpat Rai. On April 8, 1929, he and fellow nationalist B.K. Dutt detonated a bomb in the Central Legislative Assembly. According to their leaflet, the goal was not to kill but to "make the deaf hear" to remind the foreign government of its callous exploitation. At age 23, Bhagat Singh was put on trial and executed.
