E.V.Ramaswamy Naicker founded the Self-Respect Movement. He joined the Congress before leaving it after learning that lower castes were required to sit aside from upper ones. The Self-Respect Movement's founder, Periyar, asserted that untouchables were in fact the defenders of the native Tamil and Dravidian cultures that had been repressed by the Brahmans.
Periyar criticised Hindu texts, particularly the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana, and the ancient lawgiver Manu's Codes. He claimed that these texts had been used to prove the superiority of Brahmans over other castes and the domination of men over women.
