In 1789, the French people destroyed their ancient government. They adopted the famous words "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité"—Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity as their slogan. To the French revolutionaries, the most crucial aspect of the motto was equality or the abolition of privilege. Before 1789, inequality was common in the previous regime. The privileged orders were the nobles and clergy. They were not subject to direct taxes such as the taille or land tax.
