Fishing has always been an important occupation, and Bengali literature contains several references to fish. Bengal is a riverine plain with abundant rice and fish. These two items, understandably, feature prominently on the menus of even the poorest Bengalis. Therefore, fishing has always been a popular pastime, and there are numerous references to fish in Bengali literature. Furthermore, terracotta plaques on the walls of Buddhist temples and viharas depict scenes of fish being dressed and carried to the market in baskets. Brahmins were not permitted to consume non-vegetarian food, but due to the popularity of fish in the local diet, the Brahmanical authorities relaxed this prohibition for the Bengali Brahmanas.
