A unitary government is a type of government system in which the entire government is controlled by a single power known as the central government. It differs slightly from the federal government model. The central government has the authority to increase or decrease the power of subnational units in a unitary government. It has the ability to both create and destroy. Unitary governments can be found in the United Kingdom, Afghanistan, Italy, China, Saudi Arabia, and Spain, among other places. The central government has decision-making power, which is shared with the lower-level government when necessary.
