This practice of erecting megaliths to indicate graves began about 3000 years ago and prevailed throughout the Deccan, south India, and northeast Kashmir. Archaeologists have found some megaliths on the surface, while other megalithic burials are often underground. Sometimes, archaeologists find a single large stone standing on the ground, indicating a burial underneath.
