Detailed Solution

James Watt improved the steam engine produced by Newcomen and patented the new engine in 1781. After 1775, in locations where coal was expensive (particularly in Cornwall), Newcomen's engine was gradually superseded by a superior design created by James Watt, in which the steam was condensed in a separate condenser. As a result, there were only 321 steam engines in England at the start of the nineteenth century. There were 80 in the cotton industry, nine in the wool industry, and the remainder in mining, canal works, and iron works. Other industries did not adopt steam engines until much later in the century. As a result, even the most powerful new technology that increased labour efficiency exponentially was reluctant to be adopted by industrialists.
