Camillo de Cavour, a political leader and Italian statesman, was formally appointed Prime Minister of Italy in 1861. Count Cavour, a crucial figure in the Italian unification, was neither a revolutionary nor a democrat. Nonetheless, he was instrumental in forging a diplomatic alliance between Sardinia Piedmont and France, which led to the former defeating Austrian forces in 1859. He also kept in touch with Garibaldi. In May 1860, during the reign of King Victor Emmanuel, a large number of armed volunteers led by Giuseppe Garibaldi joined the fray. In 1860, they marched into South Italy and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, where they successfully rallied local peasants to drive out the Spanish rulers.
