Defection in politics refers to switching of parties by a person for personal gain. The person in question changes his allegiance from the party he got elected to a different party. It is usually seen when the person has already been selected from the said party but changes his allegiance when another party offers them benefits in favour of his support. To reduce defection, an amendment was made in the constitution prohibiting the elected MPs and MLAs from switching parties. It is one of the significant reforms introduced by the legal organisations in India so that internal party conflicts do not bring political instability.
