Ladakh is a desert region in Jammu and Kashmir's eastern Himalayas. Since this area doesn't get much rain and spends most of the year blanketed in snow, very little agriculture is feasible here. In the area, sheep are raised. There, sheep's milk, meat, and pashmina wool are used. Goats, cows are other livestock that are raised. Trade is drawn to pashmina because it is highly valued and in demand in this area. Due to the numerous passes, it was seen as a useful trading route. These roads were travelled by caravans that transported carpets, raw silk, spices, and textiles. Buddhism travelled from Ladakh to Tibet. Ladakh is referred to as Little Tibet. There is a sizable Muslim community here. Ladakh has a long history of poetry and song. The ‘Kesar Saga’, the Tibetan national epic, is performed and sung locally by Buddhists and Muslims alike.
