Detailed Solution

Mansabdar is a person who holds a Mansab (a position or rank). Turanis, Iranians, Afghans, and Indian Muslims who joined the Mughal service were enrolled as Mansabdar. The Mughals used this as a grading system to fix rank, salary, and military responsibilities. The rank and salary of a Mansabdar were determined by a numerical value called Zat. The higher the Zat the larger his salary and the more prestigious the noble's position in the court of the King. Mansabdar was assigned military responsibilities also. He was required to maintain a specific number of sawar or cavalrymen. Cavalrymen were brought by the Mansabdar for review, got registered, their horses branded, and then received money to pay them as salary.
