Light Year is a unit to measure distances in the universe.  The distance between heavenly bodies in space is very large. Measuring these distances in kilometres is not possible. Astronomers use special units to measure distances in space called light year. A light year is the distance travelled by light in one year.
1 Light Year = Speed of light × no. of seconds in a year
                         = 3×108 m/s × 365×24 × 60 ×60s
                         ≈ 9.5 ×1015 m 
                         ≈ 9.5 ×1012 Km
