Detailed Solution

Sinhala is adopted as the official religion of Sri Lanka. This language, the native tongue of the Sinhalese people, is spoken by around 74 per cent of the Sri Lankan population. The National Language Act of 1956 replaced English, which had been mandated during British colonial rule, and made Sinhala the only official language. Sri Lanka has taken the following acts in compliance with a 1956 Act: Buddhism must be supported and promoted by the state. Government and academic hiring practices preferred Sinhala candidates. Tamil was disregarded mainly as Sinhala was made the only official language.
