Detailed Solution

Defection is an act of changing party allegiance from the party on which a person got elected (to a Legislative body) to a different party.
"Defection" refers to a politician joining a different political party from the one they were elected to. A party member risks losing their seat in the house if they disobey the whip on any matter. Both the State legislatures and the Parliament must abide by it. Until the anti-defection law went into effect, defection had become a source of instability in the administration throughout the post-independence period. The anti-defection statute guarantees governmental instability. MPs and MLAs vote with their party in mind. The constitution was revised, and the 10th schedule was added to it in 1985 to reduce political defection in India.
