A wasteland is any land that cannot be put to proper use due to decreased fertility or useability. It could be due to several reasons - both natural and manmade. Waterlogged land is not suitable for the cultivation of most crops. Land under extensive mining cannot be used for agricultural or other purposes since its fertility is permanently affected. Saline land has increased salt content, which is not recommended for most crops. Degraded land is any land whose quality has decreased due to reduced fertility or similar reasons. These lands are not suitable for agricultural use or cannot be used to their maximum potential due to degradation. They are known as wastelands.
