Widespread deaths characterise famine due to starvation and epidemics. It occurs in vast terrestrial areas due to various environmental and biological reasons. Many famines happened between the 11th and 17th centuries due to a lack of rainfall and droughts. Some of these were: the Bengal Famine of 1943, the Great Bengal famine of 1770, the Orissa famine of 1866, the Bihar famine of 1873, and the Agra famine of 1837.
Causes of famine are Natural causes-Flood, cyclones, droughts, earthquakes, and Man-made causes-Lack of food, improper food distribution, and consumption of contaminated water and air.
