Detailed Solution

Surat is known as the gateway to the west.
Surat has been called the gateway for trade with West Asia with a route via the Gulf of Ormuz.
The Surat port kept busy, with an average of around a hundred ships from various countries that could be seen docked at any time. It was a prominent port for western trade during the Mughal period. The Dutch, Portuguese, and English traders set up their factories and warehouses at Surat in the seventeenth century. The markets in West Asia, Africa, and Europe demanded textiles with golden lace work (zari), in which Surat specialised. Surat is also called the gateway to Mecca because many pilgrim ships sailed from this port.
