Detailed Solution

Chennai is one of the oldest artificial ports in the country.
It is the oldest man-made port on the east coast of India. There is no natural harbour. It handles petroleum products, fertilisers, iron ore, and general cargo. Due to the existence of the harbour, the city of Chennai eventually became known as the gateway to South India. The port has grown into a hub for containers, automobiles, and project cargo on the east coast of India. Chennai Port, the third oldest of the 12 major ports, is an emerging hub on the east coast of India. This gateway port for all cargo has been providing excellent service to the country's maritime trade for 137 years. On the coast of Chennai, maritime trade began as early as 1639.
