Buffer stock mainly consists of wheat and rice. The Government declares a minimum support price during the sowing season to encourage the farmers to cultivate the food grains. After harvesting, it buys these food grains from farmers at declared rates. This buffer stock is kept in case of a shortage of food grains in areas with adequate production. Poor people in this affected area are given this buffer stock.
