China, Japan, and Korea invented the earliest print technologies. This system of hand printing was used. Books were printed in China starting in AD 594 by rubbing paper, which was also created against the inked surface of woodblocks. The traditional Chinese "accordion book" was folded and stitched at the side because it was impossible to print on both sides of the thin, porous page. Very talented craftsmen could replicate the beauty of calligraphy with incredible accuracy. The term "calligraphy" describes the practice of attractive, stylised writing. This calligraphy practice has continued to be a popular art form and hobby.
