Detailed Solution

Moon is the closest celestial body to our earth.
A celestial body which moves around the planets in the same manner the planets move around the sun is called a satellite. Our earth, as a planet, has only one satellite, which is the Moon. The diameter of the Moon equals only one-quarter that of the earth. The reason for its big appearance is its closeness to the planet compared to other celestial bodies. The approximate distance of the Moon from the earth is about 3,84,400 km away. The time taken by the Moon to move around the earth is about 27 days. The Moon supports no life-favouring conditions as it has no water and air; it only has mountains, plains and depressions.
