Harappa is the oldest city in the subcontinent.
When the first railway lines were being laid in Punjab approximately 150 years ago, engineers discovered the location of Harappa in modern-day Pakistan. They saw it as a mound with a supply of ready-made, quality bricks. As a result, hundreds of thousands of bricks from the city's walls were taken out to build railway lines. Many structures were destroyed. The site was then discovered by archaeologists, who learned that it was one of the oldest cities on the subcontinent. Since it was the first city found, the later-excavated sites with similar structures were given the name Harappan.
