INC is the oldest political party in the world. It was founded as early as 1885 in British India by a retired IAS officer A.O. Hume. It emerged as an all-India platform for the struggling Indians involved in their fight for Independence. The first session of the Congress was held in the same year of its formation, with W.C. Banerjee as its chairman. At that time, only 72 delegates had taken part in the session. Since then, Congress has played a significant role in India's freedom struggle. After its Independence, it was provided with the status of the most trusted party in the country. One primary reason why Congress ruled for such a long time in India.
