Universal adult franchise (also known as universal suffrage, common suffrage, and general suffrage of the ordinary person) is the practice of extending the right to vote to all adult citizens of a country, regardless of their gender, race, social status, wealth, political stance, or any other such criteria. The English word ‘franchise’ comes from the French word ‘franc’ which translates to free. Therefore, the right to vote, also known as the adult franchise, should be extended to all adult inhabitants of a country regardless of gender, caste, religious affiliation, or skin colour.
