Detailed Solution

Concept: Aerobic respiration is a biological process involving breakdown of sugar in the presence of oxygen and releases CO2, water, and large amount of energy.
In this process, oxygen acts as an electron acceptor producing ATP more effectively.
Steps of aerobic reactions:
This starts from the cytosol of a cell and involves four steps:
Glycolysis is the primary step of and takes place in the cytosol of cells. During this, glucose gets partially oxidized to form two molecules of pyruvic acid, two ATP, and two NADH molecules.
Oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate: This is the second step where pyruvate synthesized from the glycolysis pathway enters into the mitochondrial matrix and undergoes oxidative decarboxylation catalyzed by pyruvic dehydrogenase. In this process, both acetyl CoA and NADH are produced.
Tricarboxylic Acid (TCA) Cycle: In this oxaloacetate combines with acetyl-coenzyme A and produces citric acid. This reaction is catalyzed by citrate synthase enzymes and a molecule of CoA gets released. This cycle involves a series of reactions and produces 2 molecules of CO2, 1 molecule of ATP, and reduced forms of NADH and FADH.
Electron transport system is the last step of aerobic respiration which takes place in the inner mitochondrial membrane. In this process, large amounts of ATP molecules are produced by transferring electrons from NADH and FADH.
Hence, glycolysis is the correct answer.
