Lightning is the visible electricity discharge that occurs when a region of a cloud acquires an excess electric charge that can break down the air resistance.
During the condensation of water vapour and freezing of droplets, a large amount of heat is released, further pushing the air up at high speed. As a result, the water droplets and ice particles rub against each other in rapidly rising air. This builds up an electric charge released by a stroke of lightning. In this way, lightning is created.
