The English language continued to be used in India after its Independence. The language was a major point of contention in the Constituent Assembly. Many members believed that India's British rulers should leave the English language behind. They argued that Hindi should take its place. On the other hand, those who did not speak Hindi had a different opinion. T.T. Krishnamachari, speaking in the Assembly, issued "a warning on behalf of the people of the South," some of whom threatened to secede from India if Hindi was imposed on them. Finally, a compromise was reached: while Hindi would be the "official language" of India, English would be used in courts, services, and communications between states.
