In April 1930, when Abdul Ghaffar Khan, a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi, was taken into custody, outraged mobs protested in the streets of Peshawar while being met by armored cars and police fire. Industrial workers destroyed police stations, municipal buildings, courthouses, and railroad stations a month after Mahatma Gandhi was detained. These facilities served as symbols of British power. A terrified government's response was to implement a violent repressive strategy.
