Sangam literature comprises some of the oldest Tamil literature and deals with love, war, governance, trade and bereavement.
The word ‘Sangam’ is derived from the Buddhist phrase ‘Sangha,’ which means an ‘assembly of monks.’ The word translates to ‘assembly’ in Tamil. Tamil poets and academics convened in the Sangams(assembly) under the Pandyan monarchs. It is estimated that 8,598 poets and academics attended these gatherings. They were thought to have lasted between 120 and 150 years under many kings in the southern part of the Indian subcontinent.
