Detailed Solution

Lord Dalhousie made the policy of the Doctrine of lapse.
From 1848 to 1856, Lord Dalhousie served as the Governor-General of India. He made the policy of the Doctrine of lapse. The Doctrine stated that if a ruler died without a male heir, his kingdom would lapse, and he couldn't crown an adopted child. The ruler's kingdom would become a territory of the Company. The Company acquired many domains under this policy: Satara (1848), Sambalpur (1850), Udaipur (1852), Nagpur (1853), Jhansi (1854), and Awadh (1856). Moreover, the British said they were grateful to take over Awadh from the Nawab to free the people from misgovernment. However, the people of Awadh were angry with how the British deposed the Nawab and joined the revolt in 1857.
