Consumer awareness ensures the buyer or consumer is aware of the information about goods, services and consumer rights. It is important so that consumers can make the right choice and can make the right decision. It developed in India in the late 1980s and early 1990s with liberalisation and globalisation. A separate department called Consumer affairs in the central government is designated for protecting consumer rights. Some measures like the Enforcement of the consumer protection act of 1986, the Prevention of food adulteration act of 1954, etc., were taken to promote consumer movement in the country. The most significant element of consumer awareness is Food safety. Consumer rights include the Right to safety, the Right to be informed, the Right to choose, the Right to seek redressal, the Right to represent, Right to consumer education.
