The concept of majoritarianism has exacerbated the already intense feelings of alienation felt by Tamils in Sri Lanka due to the numerous majoritarian actions taken by Sri Lanka's democratically elected government to establish Sinhala Supremacy following its independence in 1948. Tamil was not recognised as an official language after an Act was passed in 1956 to recognise Sinhala as the only one. The government used preferential hiring practices to favour Sinhala applicants for government and academic positions. As a result, tensions between the Tamil and Sinhala communities grew over time, culminating in a civil war.
