Detailed Solution

Portuguese missionaries played a crucial role in the growth of the press in India. India has a very long and rich heritage of handwritten manuscripts in many different vernacular languages as well as Sanskrit, Arabic, and Persian. On hand-made paper or palm leaves, manuscripts were copied. Sometimes, pages had gorgeous illustrations. To maintain preservation, they would either be pressed between hardwood coverings or sewed together. Up until the late 19th century, far after the invention of print, manuscripts were still being created. In the middle of the sixteenth century, Portuguese missionaries brought the printing press to Goa for the first time. Jesuit priests printed several pamphlets and learned Konkani.
